Observation

While listening to music written for visual media, I noticed that certain compositions seem to belong so naturally to the worlds they accompany that separating them feels difficult to imagine. It made me wonder whether composers arrive at those relationships through immediate intuition or whether they emerge gradually through experimentation, repetition, and sustained curiosity. Perhaps the harmony was always capable of existing in that environment. Perhaps the relationship only became visible through the process of composition itself. ...

While watching water begin to boil, my attention drifted toward the small bubbles rising to the surface. Individually, they seemed insignificant. Each appeared briefly before disappearing, leaving little evidence that anything had changed. Yet over time, their continual emergence transformed the entire body of water. It reminded me of an idea that has been returning throughout this practice: accumulation through absence. Some transformations do not announce themselves through dramatic events. They emerge quietly through countless moments that, in isolation, appear too small to matter. The accumulation is visible only in retrospect. ...

Observations emerging through the composition of Drift and the development of an evolving artistic practice.

Listening can become a form of observation. Attention shifts away from melody and toward relationship. Distance. Texture. Absence. The composition becomes less an object to consume and more a phenomenon to study. Perhaps listening itself can become a practice.

A sequence of observations emerged one after another. Rather than forcing explanation, it may be more accurate to acknowledge a temporary increase in awareness. The observations remain. The state that produced them may not. Perhaps perception itself has seasons.

There is no urgency to explain an observation. Its value may exist precisely because it was recorded before interpretation. Meaning can emerge later. The observation belongs to the moment. Understanding belongs to time.
